So far the XL flight testing has had us absolutely stunned. The speed range is just at the point of being hard to believe. Fast as h*** and yet able to fly so slow you won't believe it will stay up there. With a totally new design approach, for 18 to 30 lbs thrust turbines, the XL retains the slow flight and shorttake off and landing ability of the old Boomerang, but you'll be surprised at the higher top speed of the new clean, low drag design. At 94" span, the estimated top speed is 175 to 180 MPH with a 25 to 30 lb thrust turbine. Using optional crow braking some of the tricks an experienced flyer can do with the XL have never been possible with a jet before now. Knife edge flight, snaps and spins, (upright or inverted, of course) and hovering in a breeze etc. etc. At the same time it is so easy to fly that it is an ideal jet trainer!
The XL is a quick plane to assemble at the flying field. It also breaks down easily and fast to go in your car. Construction is unusual in that the fuselage and booms are fibreglass, but to keep the weight down to achieve the staggering aerobatic performance the wings and tail plane (stab.) surfaces are built up with an attractive spray painted finish all round. Two carbon fibre wing spars and use of carbon fibre in the built up structures gives massive strength, but the bare airframe weight is only 7.7Kgs. (17 lbs.) giving an all up dry weight of around 28 lbs. depending on the Turbine/Radio & servos/Retracts installation used. With the big wing area, the wing loading is between 2.1 & 2.4lbs per square foot, which helps to explain the performance. As with all Boomerang designs, there is complete access to the entire fuselage interior from the nose to the turbine via the virtually full length top hatch, so it is easy to carry out any maintenance required.
After extensive flight testing and revising details, Alan Cardash and Al's Hobbies believe that it actually does live up to the claim that it can out fly any other aerobatic jet currently on the market. The advertising shots and copy are not yet ready, but so many customers have asked about the XL since it has been seen around a few UK and European meetings that we are putting a few photos, notes and videos here to show the hype was all true!
